Proudly made in the U.S.A., the Draplin Design Company of Portland and Coudal Partners, a Chicago creative firm, created Field Notes, inspired by the vanishing sub-genre of agricultural memo books, ornate pocket ledgers, and the simple, unassuming beauty of a well-crafted list.

Practical American design with a sense of history and familiarity is the essence of Field Notes. In addition to their standard products, they also produce quarterly limited editions using different papers, form factors, and printing techniques. All Field Notes paper products are manufactured in the U.S.A.

Field Notes has printed dozens of memo book variations and introduced their wildly popular line of quarterly limited editions. They love seeing how their products are used and enjoy the opportunity to explore new ideas, printing processes, and packaging in their line of products.

Field Notes products are available in a variety of paper styles, including graph, ruled, plain, and dot-graph, and they occasionally offer other paper styles like ledger or memo books with a planner format. Most of their products are in their smaller 3.5" x 5.5" Memo Book format, but they also offer larger books in their Pitch Black line as well as their 80-Page Steno Pad.

The inspiration behind Field Notes products comes from a tradition of promotional memo books distributed to American farmers over the last hundred years by seed, tractor, and other agricultural companies. Now, Field Notes offers smartly-designed, vintage-inspired pocket notebooks, notepads, journals, calendars, planners, and writing accoutrements for the modern jotter.

In 2013, Field Notes introduced their "Pitch Black" dot-graph Field Notes Memo Book, which quickly became one of their most popular memo books. After a few reprints, they made some upgrades and now offer a range of Pitch Black books, including dot-graph and ruled options in both memo book and notebook formats.

Field Notes products are praised for their rugged and durable covers, made from 118 lb (320 GSM) kraft cardstock from French Paper Co. in Michigan, and their responsibly manufactured 60 lb (90 GSM) Finch Opaque body paper, which is a pleasure to write on. All Field Notes products are proudly printed and manufactured in the USA, with evidence of their artisan-first processes, like locally printed pages from suppliers in the midwest and precisely rounded corners stamped by a machine noted inside the back cover.
